5 Facts you didn't know about Hydrangeas

It’s very interesting that nature contains so much beauty. And the best examples are flowers. Not only are they beautiful and appealing to the eye, but flowers act as a medium to celebrate love, comfort, achievement, friendship, prayer, peace, and much more.

Regardless of where you live in this world, the elegant, beautiful Hydrangea is likely a staple in your garden.  Hydrangea also known as Hortensia is a flowering plant native to southern and eastern Asia, with almost 70 to 75 different species.  Even though Hydrangeas are considered old-fashioned flowers, they are very attractive, easy to cultivate, tolerate almost any soil, and produce abundant blooms. Blooming from the spring to the fall, this flower is so loved for its classic beauty and enduring style.

Now, let’s have a look at the 5 essential facts every hydrangea-lover should know:

1) History and Origin of its Name: The name ‘Hydrangea’ originated from Latin, resulting from the words ‘hydro’ (water) and ‘angeion’ (barrel/pitcher). As the name suggests, all hydrangea varieties need a lot of water to survive. Besides this name, it is also known as Hortensia. Hydrangea was first cultivated in Japan and is now seen in southern and eastern Asia including Korea, Himalayas, China, Japan, Taiwan, Indonesia, and America.

2) Hydrangeas Change Color: Except for white hydrangeas, other Hydrangea flowers can change color, depending on the pH of the soil. Alkaline soil mostly produces pink blooms; whereas acidic soil produces blue blooms of Hydrangea.

3) Symbolism: While undeniably beautiful, the hydrangea is believed to symbolize different emotions right from heartfelt emotion to frigidity and bad luck.

  • Blue Hydrangea: Symbolizes apology, gratitude & understanding
  • White Hydrangea: Symbolizes purity & grace
  • Purple Hydrangea: Symbolizes romance, true feelings & sincere emotions
  • Pink Hydrangea: Symbolizes pride & royalty
  • Red Hydrangea: Symbolizes love & gratitude

4) Health Benefits & Side-effects: The root and underground stem (rhizome) of Hydrangea is used for medicinal purposes to treat urinary tract problems such as infections of the bladder, urethra, and prostate, enlarged prostate, kidney stones. It is also used for hay fever and is considered to have anti-inflammatory properties.

But make sure to consult a doctor before trying out this because high amounts of use of hydrangea can have potential side effects like chest tightness, upset stomach, nausea, vomiting, and dizziness.

5) Cut Hydrangeas Can Last For Long: Hydrangeas are very thirsty flowers; therefore cut hydrangeas can last up to 10 days with all that freshness if you replenish their water regularly. But in the case of properly dried hydrangea flowers, it could last for a year or two.

 Closing Thoughts:

Hydrangeas are wonderfully fragrant flowers and many of us recognize this flower as a signal of summer. But other than its beauty, there are many interesting facts about Hydrangeas that we need to know as we get prepared for their peak season.
